NAVI MUMBAI: In an attempt to reduce the number of school dropouts, the civic body has planned to introduce night classes in municipal schools. A resolution in this regard has been approved by the NMMC’s general body, civic officials said.
The proposed night schools will commence by admitting students from Classes IX and X from the next academic year.

The 17 civic schools in the city will provide space for running the night schools and the project will be implemented on trial basis. Interested candidates can contact the nearby civic schools, mayor Sudhakar Sonawane said.
“Since eduction is free up to Class 7, most of the students drop out after as fees are too high in private schools and civic schools have limited seats,” he added.
The number of night schools will be decided based on the number of interested candidates and teaching staff will be employed accordingly. Night college for HSC students will be started in the coming years, Sonawane said.
Civic officials maintain that around 2,000 students are deprived of secondary and higher secondary education every year. The night school project is aimed at helping these students.
